A week after their "Hands Up, Don't Shoot!" show of solidarity, several St. Louis Rams players made another societal statement Sunday with all the message: "I can not Breathe."
The slogan describes Eric Garner, who died after having a New York police man placed him in a chokehold during an arrest for selling loose cigarettes. A grand jury decided last week so it wouldn't normally indict the officer. A youtube video on the arrest showed Garner gasping, "I cannot breathe."
Guard Davin Joseph wrote the words within the cleats he wore during pregame warmups prior to the Rams beat the Washington Redskins 24-0. Tight end Jared Cook been there written on his wrist tape. Receiver Kenny Britt had several names — including Michael Brown and Trayvon Martin — written on his blue and gold cleats. What they are called were of black men or teens whose deaths generated protests.
"I believe like we should support might know about feel meets your needs," said Joseph, who intended to wear the cleats over the game but needed to change as a result of condition in the slick turf with the Redskins' stadium. "We must also have a viewpoint of sticking up those of you that don't have a voice."
Joseph Tweeted a graphic of his shoes prior to the game with all the message: "R.I.P. Eric Garner."
Players at other NFL games expressed similar sentiments. Detroit Lions running back Reggie Bush had "I am unable to Breathe" coded in black across his blue warmup shirt. Browns cornerback Johnson Bademosi wrote what it's all about about the back from the shirt he wore before a sport in Cleveland.
"Honestly, I've for ages been the quiet kid. I've been usually the one who's reserved, to sort of settle back instead of really wind up in politics and items like that," said Bush, whose mother has been a police for around twenty years. "But I'm not sure why I recently felt some type of ... I guess the problem just touched me.
"It's form of resonated beside me. Not because I have been by using a similar situation or because I've seen anybody proceed through it. I just now really felt terrible by what happening these past two weeks."
Lions coach Jim Caldwell supported Bush's action.
"I spent their childhood years within the '60s, where everybody was socially conscious," Caldwell said. "In my opinion from it. I'd be described as a hypocrite only stood over here and told you any differently, because probably, one particular protests that Dr. (Martin Luther) King and some in the others that took an element in non-violent protests, is the reason why I'm standing here in front of you today."
Bademosi said there was clearly players and coaches on his team who weren't even aware what "I am unable to Breathe" meant. He the Garner case "an absurd situation."
"It may not be an us-against-them thing," Bademosi said. "It's about us waiting in solidarity with people who know what's what."
On Saturday night, Chicago Bulls guard Derrick Rose wore the material on his T-shirt during warmups before an NBA game.
Choosing one not to ever indict the officer came to another grand jury decided not to indict police Darren Wilson above the Aug. 9 shooting of Brown in Ferguson, Missouri. Last week, before a Rams home game, five St. Louis players — including Cook and Britt — took area of making the "Hands up. Don't Shoot!" gesture regarding Brown. The St. Louis Police Association expressed outrage and requested the NFL to discipline players; the league declined.
Although Garner's death occurred not even close St. Louis, Joseph felt the call to make his feelings known.
"Therefore, it's another incident where it's a sad case as well as it sad to find out," Joseph said. "Every life nowadays will be worth something, when you lose one, it hurts, regardless of who it can be. We've got to mean the worthiness of life."
Added Cook: "It is something that's imperative that you lots of people."
